Stretching Your Mind and Your Body

by Deborah Tiffany

I am sitting on the floor at The Wellness Show in Vancouver. My eyes are closed and I am oblivious to the passers-by. I am only aware of Yod’s knee pressing into my back as she gently rocks my shoulders and upper body backwards. It feels good. I feel my cramped muscles tighten and relax.

It is said that Thai massage was brought from India 2500 hundred years ago by the first Buddhist monks who introduced Buddhism to Thailand.

The slow, meditative postures calm the mind while stretching the body. As the body relaxes, tension is dissolved and circulation is improved. After the massage the body feels energized and flexible.

“In Western society, we have so much and yet we want more,” says John Gan, Director of the Thai Massage Center.

“I had a very successful career working for a large corporation in Asia. I was paid well and enjoyed the many benefits that come with that lifestyle: travelling first class, golf and club memberships, international schooling for my daughters.

However, I was constantly stressed and unhappy. I didn’t have time to enjoy life with my family. I began to look for alternative ways to work and enhance the quality of my life at the same time.”

During his trips to Thailand, he discovered that people there were relaxed and happy, yet had very little. They had less stuff and more Life.

Thai massageHe decided to bring Thai massage to Canada to help people make a change in their lives. Thai massage is healing as well as relaxing. It is not just a physical change that it makes, but “an emotional shift that can’t be intellectualized.”

In 2003, affiliated with the Thai Massage Center of Thailand, Gan established the Thai Massage Center (TMC) of Canada.

TMC Canada provides a number of massage services, including mobile massage, at 3 locations. It also offers a range of training programs from 8 hours to full certification from the TMC Thailand and TMC Canada.

Thai Legend ResortRecently, a week-long Thai Wellness Vacation in northern Thailand was added to allow Canadians the opportunity to experience longer-lasting benefits of Thai Wellness by immersing themselves in the Thai environment and culture.

Yod works down my spine, across my shoulders, pulling me off the mat by my shoulder muscles. I feel my muscles aching but each time she pulls me up, my shoulders relax a little more.

All too soon, she is finished. Normally a session would last for a minimum of 60 minutes. I have just had a 10-minute taste of Thai massage. My neck and shoulders are warm and relaxed. I feel more energized.

I mentally calculate how I would feel after having a full hour of this experience and make a note to myself to book an appointment soon, so that the rest of my body can feel as great as my neck and shoulders.
