Taking Time for Ourselves by Leslie Alexander Are in love and long for love Pieces of straw tremble In the presence of amber." Rumi It was the perfect getaway. My husband and I were determined to escape the world of newspaper headlines and commuter traffic, so we slipped away mid-week on a ferry to Saltspring Island. Our destination was the Salt Springs Spa Resort where we had reservations for the Romance Package that included a two night stay, massage and dinner for two. The time spent on the ferry became the transition from everyday life to a destination where the focus is only on each other. We talked a little, laughed a bit and held hands a lot. This was certainly different from our usual routine! We docked at Ganges Harbour, enjoyed a leisurely stroll in the village and headed for the resort where the Ocean View Chalet was our home away from home. We found a barbeque on the deck, a woodburning fireplace, cozy sitting area, comfy bed and full kitchen. In the shower, we found a dispenser of Purely Saltspring Body Wash scented with essential oils (no artificial fragrances) and sodium laurel sulfate free. We immediately decided to buy some to take home.Bruce built a roaring fire and we settled in. We loved our ocean view framed with arbutus and hemlocks and appreciated the total privacy we were experiencing. Leisurely activities like bike riding and walking led to gentle conversations, comfortable silences and a sense of peacefulness. We speculated about whether we could ever be islanders and what keeps us on the mainland only to escape to an island. Getaways often provoke conversations that might not otherwise have occurred. We scheduled our massage appointments for the next day and made plans for dinner at the Raven Street Market Café only minutes away on Fernwood Road. Dinner was served by a cozy fire. (In summer you might choose to be out on the deck.) Although I had not been aware of it, Bruce had purchased a surprise for me when were in the village earlier that day and presented me with a wide, wooden leopard-print bracelet as a memento of our “wild getaway”! I slipped it on as our delicious dinner was served. Bruce devoured the mussels and I, too, enjoyed a seafood dish. The next morning we awakened to dark, brooding clouds and rain. It was great to curl up together under the duvet listening only to the sound of rain – no TV, no Blackberry, no phone, no sirens or car alarms – just the soft sounds of falling rain. Bruce brought me coffee in bed and made a crackling fire. We looked forward to our massages and a luxurious nap to follow. Bruce met his masseur, Carlos, in the main building nearby. I chose to have my masseuse, Marnie, come to our chalet where she set up the portable massage table, added logs to the fire and reviewed the information sheet I had completed. She asked about my massage preference and whether I would like soft relaxation music.I loved being near the roaring fire and being enveloped in the fragrance of lavender and geranium oils while being able to enjoy the gorgeous view before me. Marnie’s expert touch completely eased the tension I often carry in my neck and shoulders, and my entire body felt restored. Before leaving she stoked the fire again, brought me water and made sure I was comfortable. Since both Bruce and I had chosen relaxation massages, we were quick to tumble into bed for that long nap. Awake and refreshed, we decided to try out the inviting tub for two with water from the local salt spring pulsating from its jets. Quite a phenomenon! We sat there laughing, talking and just enjoying ourselves in this totally relaxed state. We agreed that there is indeed, a need to get away, rest, relax and reconnect on a regular basis. There is much to be said for taking time away from everything and focusing only on each other. We are already planning another getaway! How about you?
