Painless Pledging:

How to Attract Your Perfect Sponsors

by Diane Riley

When I heard about Deborah's Relaxathon, I became very excited about supporting her in making it a success.

This was the first time I had ever canvassed anyone to sponsor me (except for selling Girl Guide cookies). I was a little nervous but I decided to accept the challenge.

Below are the steps that I took to make my Relaxathon experience a success:

Begin with the end in mind. I decided how much money I intended to collect in pledges. How many sponsors would I need to collect that amount? What would be the average pledge in order to achieve my intention?

Become familiar with how the program works. I wanted to be able to enthusiastically explain it, with confidence, to my potential sponsors. I found that others were magnetized by my enthusiasm and wanted to learn more about it.

Create a list of relaxing activities and decide how much time to commit to doing them each day. By having a plan, it made it easier to achieve my goals and I knew in advance that I could manage it.

Be prepared to give sponsors an idea of how much to pledge. Based on my plan, I knew how much time I had committed to for the length of the Relaxathon. Then I worked out a total at $.25 a Relaxathon point. I found some sponsors preferred to pledge a specific amount regardless of the number of minutes I participated.

Choose like-minded people who would be willing to support the cause - and visualize them signing the pledge form. Thinking that the best place to begin was at home, the first two names I put on my list were mine and my husband’s! Next I listed some friends and associates whom I thought would also be supportive of the project.

Give thanks, in advance, for all the people who will sponsor you.

Approach potential sponsors in a friendly and enthusiastic way. I told them a little about the Relaxathon and gave them the web site address so that they could check it out for themselves. I also told my sponsors that they would receive a tax receipt for their pledges of $10 or more. And I remained unattached to the outcome i.e., I didn’t take it personally if they said no.

Carry the pledge form everywhere so that sponsors can sign up on the spot. You never know where you might meet a potential sponsor (E.g. bank and grocery store line-ups). I found many of my sponsors were impressed by my preparedness and immediately gave their commitment.

Encourage sponsors to participate. I regularly asked my sponsors if they knew of others who might be interested in sponsoring me or whether they would like to participate in the Relaxathon themselves.

Collect the pledges in a timely fashion. As soon as the Relaxathon was over, I followed up with all my sponsors and I persisted until I had collected every pledge.

Send a thank you note or e-mail. I truly appreciated the support of my sponsors and enjoyed letting them know the results of my participation.

Celebrate your success!!!

By following the above steps, I was able to support the valuable work of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon whose goal is to eliminate heart disease and stroke, as well as earn one of the prizes from a local spa.

I wish you tremendous success with your participation!
