Wisdom to enrich your life

Cool Tips for Hot Flashes

by Marissa Schiesser

Does getting together with friends for Sunday coffee involve conversations around the embarrassing flush of heat and redness that came over you the other day when in line for your skim double vanilla latte?

Or, and more likely, that the flash of heat happened after your latte and while you were chatting with your handsome neighbor. Hot flashes, weight gain, hair loss, insomnia, loss of libido and other menopause symptoms seem to be the norm and accepted as part of life instead of something that can be changed.

The good news is you don’t have to live with a hormonal imbalance. It’s not normal, it is just very common. You have the power to change this. You can balance your body if you provide it with the right tools.

For example, for one of my clients, Sue, I recommended that she eliminate caffeine totally. Caffeine can cause instant hot flashes as well as other symptoms such as blood sugar ups and downs, sleeping problems, fatigue, headaches and sugar cravings. Eliminating caffeine may seem like a daunting and unquestionable task to do, but to Sue’s surprise, she found it wasn’t so difficult.

By providing adrenal and thyroid support and replacing coffee with Nature's First Food a health giving drink, Sue was able to slowly eliminate caffeine. Her hot flashes decreased and her energy and clarity increased. She felt great!

Now caffeine is one factor but there are others that need to be addressed on a personal basis. Here are some tips to get you started on your way to hormone bliss:

Get outside for 15 minutes of daylight everyday without sunglasses or sunscreen, in the winter. Low levels of light in the winter tend to lower energy, increase mood swings and can increase weight gain. Even if it is overcast you will benefit from the light. It helps to stimulate the pineal and thyroid glands and charge your batteries.

Increase your intake of fibre. Fibre binds to toxins and excess estrogen and moves them out of your body. Good sources are whole grains, ground flax and hemp seeds, veggies and fruit.

Increase your intake of Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s). EFA’s are oils that are needed from your daily diet for energy, hormone production, lubrication of joints, lowering of inflammation and more. Great sources of EFA’s include hemp seeds, dark green veggies, omega-3 eggs, salmon, ground flax seeds, walnuts and Nature’s First Food, a whole food supplement that can be added to smoothies.

Lower stress through exercise, relaxation and whatever brings you joy and laughter. Also remember that stress is your reaction to a situation and you can change this reaction because you are the only one who thinks your thoughts.

You can create hormone bliss with the right tools. Learn the root causes of hormone imbalance; hot flashes aren’t a soy deficiency. Find real answers to the root causes and how to lessen the time you have to take supplements.
